    وأتى المشيب وكل شيء متعب

    Youth and every pleasant thing have gone;

    Gray hair and every wearying thing have come.

    Youth departed, not lingering as it set

    In my pitch-dark night, like a setting star.

    Youth has gone without bidding me farewell—yes,

    Youth has gone; would that it had not gone!

    اياي من لذاته في موكب

    How lovely it was when it set off, leaving

    Me behind, in a procession of its pleasures.

    And indeed tears flowed from my eye after it;

    What good are tears that do not flow?

    And gray hair came; when it came, I did not

    Welcome it to its lodging on my head.

    Time, the day my locks turned gray, furrowed

    Its face, which till then had been unfurrowed.

    ولعل يوم الموت غير عصبصب

    Gray hair makes the day of life harsh;

    And perhaps the day of death is not harsh.

    ويعز الا في المنية مطلبي

    Indeed, I seek rest in my life;

    And what I seek is elusive, except in death.

    And death's vulture, as it soars, is about

    To swoop headlong upon me with a talon.

    هيهات ان النعش اخشن مركب

    I do not wish to ride a speeding bier;

    Far be it! A bier is the roughest mount.

    ما تصنعين بها اذا لم تسكن

    O eye, you are rich in tears;

    What will you do with them if they do not soothe?

    فشدوت اوقظه بلحن مطرب

    Love lay hidden in the cradle of my heart;

    So I sang to awaken it with an enchanting melody.

    And I recalled how I had grown beside it,

    As doves grow in a pasture lush with grass.

    Until, when gray hair blazed, I saw it

    Casting ashes over my gray-haired head.

    اما ضميري فهو غير مؤنبي

    My reason reproaches me for my excess in it;

    As for my conscience, it does not reproach me.

    After youth, I have no need of you,

    O sun of my beautiful dreams—so set!

    No companion remains to me but poetry,

    Which honors pledges and is not fickle.

    Through it I mourn the joys of a time gone by,

    In my remaining time, which has not passed.

    والشعر ديني في الحياة ومذهبي

    Poetry is my principle, the one I chose for myself;

    And poetry is my religion in life and my creed.

    And poetry is a lamp; by its light I dispel

    Whatever deep darkness lies in the nights of my ordeal.

    With people whose outlooks differ from my own.

    O Truth, indeed, in all my stances I am

    Your partisan—if my partisanship can help.
