You sought for the people an awakening in life,

And a return to the path of salvation,

And a surge forward, as nations had surged

Before, and an awakening from slumber.

So you cried to them to spring up nimbly,

And traverse the road in leaps,

To shake off, like the wind, the chains

    That weighed them down with their many links;

To walk in the light of learning,

That shields them from the disgrace of stumbling.

    فالحقوهم ووسعوا الخطوات

    You said, 'The nations have already outstripped you;

So catch up with them, and lengthen your strides.'

You said, 'Here is light for you,' yet instead

They kept preferring to remain in darkness.

They carried stagnation so far that it seemed

The people were folk who had not felt life.

They spat out the rights you granted them,

Which generations had sought, as one spits out a date stone.

You sought to rouse them, but they found within

    Themselves no desire for awakenings.

You wished to free them, but they would accept

Nothing but bondage with tightly fastened links.

So they drew near to guard it in throngs

That advanced, never slackening in their assaults.

They rejected light, happiness, and liberation,

Scorning guidance and those who guide.

Good deeds repaid with evil deeds—

That is a wretched recompense for good deeds.

History will extol what you possess:

A soul of lofty nobility, and firm resolves.

    They preferred—and ignorance holds sway—

    That women should remain veiled.

A girl may indeed look at her father,

    And sorrow fills those looks.

What has held Muslims back behind others

Is Muslim men's oppression of Muslim women.

Do you think they will turn away from error

And from the woes it brings?

Or will they say, 'This is how we found

Our fathers and mothers in days of old'?

They are an inheritance from the dead.

    Against the assaults of knowledge.

    قد تضيع الالوف في الوحدات

    Its many supporters count for nothing;

Thousands may vanish among mere ones.

You have attributed to unveiling a vanity

That is reckless and may lead to lapses.

Does the veil stand between the woman who has not

Been educated and recklessness in her desires?

Rather, I see the veil as enabling what

You fear: outrages against young women.

I have found stagnation closer to destruction,

And I have found life in movement.

    O advocate, your people still

Turn their gaze toward the past alone.

Your people see in renewal nothing but

An innovation that banishes them from the gardens of Paradise.

This is a paradise for you; enter it,

And eat whatever good things you wish.

I hope for their return to you,

And I wish that my hope should not fail.

That is my wish; if it is lost,

My soul will waste away after it in grief.

This poem of mine is for you, so read

It; you will find in it clear truths.

So listen awhile to the melodies.

It has drunk the water of the Tigris and Euphrates.

Many a poem has verses that, to

The ear, seem a gathering of sobs.
