The most wretched of all creatures is a poet stabbed
The poet, most wretched of men -
by the misfortunes of time, blow after blow.
The days' events have pierced him with spears,

People have gathered roses from his plantings,
While people plucked roses from his gardens,
while he has gathered thorns from them.
He himself has plucked but thorns from there.
