O spirit of these worlds,

O soul of this world

I am a spark from you,

I am but a spark of you

قد استطارت تبتغي

لنفسها أن تعلنا

flown forth, seeking

That sought to reveal

to make itself manifest.

Itself and make known

إن بصيصي كله

إن بصيصي كله

من بعض ذلك السنى

من بعض ذلك السنى

Indeed, all my glimmer

That my ray entirely

comes from a portion of that radiance.

Comes from that brilliance

إنك أنت الكون ورا

إنك أنت الكون ورا

لذي له قد كونا

لذي له قد كونا

Indeed, you are the universe, and

You are the universe that

the one who brought it into being.

Has brought into being all that is

وإنك العقل الذي

وإنك العقل الذي

قد بث فيه السننا

قد بث فيه السننا

And you are the intellect that

You are the mind that

has instilled the laws within it.

Implanted order in it

يا لك من مهندس

يا لك من مهندس

بنى الدنى وما ونى

بنى الدنى وما ونى

What an architect you are,

O what an architect you are

who built the worlds and never flagged!

Who built the world and all that passes

بنى بحكمة لهذ

بنى بحكمة لهذ

بالغة فأتقنا

بالغة فأتقنا

He built with his wisdom,

With consummate wisdom and skill

profound, and made it perfect.

You made it most excellent

ما أنا إلا أنت محسو

ما أنا إلا أنت محسو

سا فهل أنت أنا

سا فهل أنت أنا

I am nothing but you in perceptible

I am none but you made conscious

form—so are you I?

So are you me?

منك انبثقت بعدما

منك انبثقت بعدما

فيك كمنت ازمنا

فيك كمنت ازمنا

From you I sprang, after

From you I emerged after

lying hidden in you for ages.

I lay hidden in you for eons

فكنت طوراً خافياً

فكنت طوراً خافياً

وكنت طوراً بينا

وكنت طوراً بينا

Thus at one time I was hidden,

I was at times unseen

and at another I was manifest.

At others manifest

وسوف ابقى بك من

وسوف ابقى بك من

بعد الردى مرتهنا

بعد الردى مرتهنا

And I shall remain with you,

And I will remain bound to you

bound even after death.

After passing away

وليس موتي غير تغيير

ي فيك السكنا

And my death is nothing but changing

My death is but a change

my dwelling within you.

Of dwelling place in you

وليس فيه انتقالتي

منك اليك من عنا

Nor does my passage in it,

In my transitions

from you to you, entail any hardship.

فلا انفصال عنك لي

هناك كنت ام هنا

So there is no separation from you for me,

There is no separation

whether I am there or here.

Whether here or there

ان المكان بعض ما

وسعته والزمنا

Indeed, space is part of what

For space is but an extent

you encompass—and so is time.

You made room for, and time

ان الحياة ومضة

ان الحياة ومضة

منك ابت ان تكمنا

منك ابت ان تكمنا

Indeed, life is a flash

Life is but a flash

from you that refused to lie hidden.

From you that hid us

كل الذي فيك ارا

ه بعيوني حسنا

All that is within you—I see

All that I see in you

it as beautiful with my eyes.

I see with my eyes as beautiful

لا غرو امّا عبد الا

نسان فيك الوثنا

No wonder if humankind worships

No wonder mankind worships

the idol in you.

الكون قد بنيته

وانت خير من بنى

You have built the universe,

You built the universe

and you are the best of builders.

بك الوجود واجب

فليس يقبل الفنا

Through you, existence is necessary,

By you existence is necessary

so it admits no annihilation.

It cannot suffer destruction

وليس كون ماله

وليس كون ماله

من اول مكونا

من اول مكونا

And a universe without

Nor is there a universe

a beginning is uncreated.

That you did not first design

هو الذي اراد ان

هو الذي اراد ان

نسيء اوان نحسنا

نسيء اوان نحسنا

He is the one who willed that

It is you who willed that

we do evil or do good.

We do good or evil

وهو الذي صير منا

وهو الذي صير منا

ملحداً ومؤمنا

ملحداً ومؤمنا

And he is the one who made of us

And you who made us

atheists and believers.

Unbelievers or believers

اذا جنيت مكرهاً

اذا جنيت مكرهاً

فهل انا الذي جنى

فهل انا الذي جنى

If I have sinned under compulsion,

If I am compelled to sin

am I, then, the one who sinned?

Is it I who sinned?

ألم نكن لما قضى

ألم نكن لما قضى

به مثالا حسنا

به مثالا حسنا

Were we not, of what he decreed,

Were we not, when you decreed

a fine example?

For us, an excellent example?

اللَه لا يجزي على

اتيان ما شاء لنا

اتيان ما شاء لنا

God does not punish for

God does not burden a soul

doing what he willed for us.

Beyond what it can bear

ليس الخلود في غيا

ليس الخلود في غيا

بة الجحيم هينا

بة الجحيم هينا

Eternal dwelling in the hidden

Eternal hellfire is not

depths of Hell is no easy thing.

Light punishment

مخافتي من ناره

مخافتي من ناره

تثير فيّ الشجنا

تثير فيّ الشجنا

My fear of his fire

My fear of its flames

stirs sorrow within me.

Stirs in me sorrows

والشك في رحمته

والشك في رحمته

يجرح قلبي مثخنا

يجرح قلبي مثخنا

And doubt about his mercy

While doubts about His mercy

wounds my heart grievously.

Wound my heart full of gashes
