والشعر منه كتاب

آياته بينات

And some poetry is a book

And of poetry a book

whose verses are clear.

Its verses clear proofs

ومنه ما رق حتى

كأنه عبرات

كأنه عبرات

And some of it grows so tender

And of it what is gentle such

that it seems like tears.

فانه نفثات

it is indeed outpourings.

It is but outpourings

والصدق مستندات

Poetry that finds in my feelings

Poetry from my feelings

and in truth its foundations.

With truth its pillars

وإنما صقلته ال

خطوب والنكبات

And it has been polished only by the

I polished it not with

hardships and calamities.

تمده كلما غا

تمده كلما غا

ض دجلة والفرات

ض دجلة والفرات

Whenever it runs dry, it is replenished

Rather they feed it whenever

by the Tigris and the Euphrates.
