واليوم أنظم والحياة ملال

I once composed verse, and life was ease and plenty;

Once I composed when life was pleasure,

And today I compose verse, and life is tedium.

Today I compose though life is anguish.

لم تبق من ماء جمعت زلاله

لم تبق من ماء جمعت زلاله

في الحوض إلا هذه الأوشال

في الحوض إلا هذه الأوشال

Nothing remains of the clear water I gathered

Of the clear water I gathered in the pool,

in the basin, save these scant drops.

Only these remnants are left to cherish.
