حلمتI dreamed بانthat الدهرtime ليupon me يتبسمsmiles
وربand many a شقىwretched person بالسعادةof happiness يحلمdreams
I dreamed that time was smiling upon me;
I dreamed that fate was smiling at me,
and many a wretched soul dreams of happiness.
While many a happy man dreams of misery.
فلماthen when انقضىended ليليmy night وعدتand I returned ليقظتيto my wakefulness
رأيتI saw نهاريmy day عابساfrowning يتجهمscowling
Then, when my night ended and I returned to wakefulness,
When my night ended and I returned to wakefulness,
I saw my day frowning and scowling.
I saw my day frowning and sullen.
يغمsaddens فؤاديmy heart اليومthe day ماnot فيهin it سلوةsolace
ويقبضand constricts نفسيmy soul الليلthe night ماnot فيهin it انجمstars
The day saddens my heart; there is no solace in it,
My heart is gloomy today, no solace in it,
and the night constricts my soul; there are no stars in it.
And my soul writhes - the night has no stars.
كأنas though نهاريmy day صنوa twin of ليلa night يجننيshrouds me
وليليand my night قبرa grave ضيقnarrow الجوفthe interior مظلمdark
As though my day were the twin of a night that shrouds me,
My day is like a night that maddens me,
and my night a dark grave, narrow within.
My night a narrow, pitch-black grave.
فسيانso, alike are ليليmy night والنهارand the day كلاهماboth of them
عليهover it ظلامdarkness منfrom هموميmy cares مخيمhanging over
So my night and the day are alike, both of them;
Night and day are the same to me, both
over each hangs a darkness from my cares.
Overshadowed by worries hovering over me.
فليليso my night حتىuntil يأتيcomes اليومthe day اليلpitch-dark
ويوميand my day حتىuntil يأتيcomes الليلthe night ايومlong and harsh
So my night is pitch-dark until the day arrives,
My night lasts until day comes,
and my day is long and harsh until the night arrives.
My day lasts until night comes again.

And the free man has many pains; it is only
Sorrow has abundant thorns, but
in proportion to sensitivity that suffering comes.
Suffering comes in proportion to feeling.

People have indeed reproached me for my discontent,
Some people blamed me for my gloom -
and what person suffers without growing discontented?
What man suffers without being gloomy?

And none puts up with oppression except the one
Only he who, when hurt, feels no pain
who feels no pain when oppression befalls him.
Can bear oppression without complaining.

And all the filth of politics is washed away
The blood of all the earth will wash away
from the earth—the whole earth—by one thing: blood.
Every shred of political sophistry.

Great is he who gains mastery over all people,
Great is he who rules over all mankind,
but greater is he who has no need of people.
But greater still is he who needs no man.

There is a deluded man who thinks that he
There the arrogant one imagines
will go on enjoying what he possesses,
He will enjoy what he possesses forever.

He prides himself on the palace whose balconies
have enclosed him, as though the edifice would never crumble.
Held him as though no palace ever falls.
