I, but for the All-Merciful and His forgiveness,
Were it not for the mercy of the Merciful
would enter Hell after the resurrection.
I would have entered Hell after death

Walking in chains seventy armspans long
I walk, shuffling, bound in fetters.
In shackles and bonds

The day they cast me into the blazing Hell
seven of my Lord's mighty angels.
Seven of my Lord's stern angels

Then they said, "This is your path, take it"
even if it stretches long above that valley.
And though it stretched over that valley

These souls are but fuel"

Its flames had changed them from the whiteness
which had freshened their faces—to the color of blackness.
That once cloaked faces to blackness
