ذات حسن في عنفوان الشبيبه
Here rests an intelligent young woman,
Endowed with beauty, in the prime of youth.
قصفتsnapped غصنهاher branch المناياdeath رطيباًtender
قصفت غصنها المنايا رطيباً
فأَطالتand so prolonged بكاءthe weeping of أمٍّa mother كئيبهsorrowful
فأَطالت بكاء أمٍّ كئيبه
Death snapped her branch while it was still tender,
Thus prolonging a sorrowful mother's weeping.
ودعتbade farewell to أهلهاher family وقالتand she said بحزنin sorrow
ودعت أهلها وقالت بحزن
رحلتيmy departure عنfrom دنيايmy world هذيthis قريبهnear
رحلتي عن دنياي هذي قريبه
She bade her family farewell and said in sorrow:
"My departure from this world of mine is near."
هيshe والشمسand the sun غابتاboth vanished فيat زمانٍa time
هي والشمس غابتا في زمانٍ
واحدٍone آهalas آهalas ياO للمصيبهfor the calamity
واحدٍ آه آه يا للمصيبه
She and the sun both vanished at the same
Time—alas, alas, what a calamity!
فابكso weep ماas much as شئتyou wish ياO يراعيmy pen وأرخand record the date
فابك ما شئت يا يراعي وأرخ
فيin شبابthe youth of الحياةlife أودتdied نجيبهNajiba
في شباب الحياة أودت نجيبه
So weep as much as you wish, O my pen, and record the date:
"In the youth of life, Najiba died."
