لعلك تبكي او لعلك تضحك

He took aim at me in his verse, seeking a quarrel.

He ridicules me in his poetry

Perhaps you weep, or perhaps you laugh.

Perhaps you may weep or perhaps you may laugh

وان لئيم القوم ان سار ضاربا

وان لئيم القوم ان سار ضاربا

الى غاية شر الطريقين يسلك

الى غاية شر الطريقين يسلك

And indeed, the base man among the people, if he sets out

And the wicked man, if he goes striking

Toward a goal, takes the worse of the two paths.

Chooses the worst of two paths

نهيتك عن خوض الخضم وقد طغى

نهيتك عن خوض الخضم وقد طغى

فانك فيه لا محالة تهلك

فانك فيه لا محالة تهلك

I forbade you to plunge into the vast sea, already raging,

I warned you against plunging into the deep end as it was overflowing

For in it you will inevitably perish.

For in it you will surely perish
