He rose, with drowsiness in his eye—
He rose with sleep still in his eyes,
a gazelle who holds sway over souls.
A gazelle with bewitching eyes.
عذارهhis cheek-down فوقabove عارضيهhis two cheeks
عذاره فوق عارضيه
كماjust as علاrose above الجّلنارَthe pomegranate blossoms آسmyrtle
كما علا الجّلنارَ آس
His cheek-down upon his cheeks
His brows hover above his cheeks
is like myrtle rising above pomegranate blossoms.
As the sword sways over its sheath.
ماnot زالceased فيin خاطريmy mind مقيماdwelling
ما زال في خاطري مقيما
كأنماas though خاطريmy mind كناسa gazelle’s lair
كأنما خاطري كناس
He still dwells in my mind,
He still lives in my heart,
as though my mind were a gazelle’s lair.
As if my heart is his dwelling place.
قدindeed افترىfabricated عاذليmy reproacher كلاماa statement
قد افترى عاذلي كلاما
يشهدbear witness فيto كذبهits falsehood أناسpeople
يشهد في كذبه أناس
My reproacher has fabricated a statement;
My censurers fabricate lies about him
people bear witness to its falsehood.
With people supporting their lies.
لاdo not تبنِbuild ياO منيتيmy heart’s desire عليهupon it
لا تبنِ يا منيتي عليه
فماfor there is no لماfor what قالهhe said it أساسfoundation
فما لما قاله أساس
Do not build upon it, O my heart’s desire,
Do not believe them, my dear,
for what he said has no foundation.
For their words have no basis.
