    فنورك هذا في المساء يزولُ

    For every rising, O Dhuka, there is a setting;

so this light of yours vanishes in the evening.

And daylight's radiance departs, and after it

a heavy night settles, O Dhuka.

You ascended to a zenith of exalted station,

and every ascent is required by a descent.

When you vanish from one land, you rise in another,

so hills and plains there shine.

This face of yours—if only it kept shining—

has a ray that sends the gaze back weary.

Yes, you set and leave us, and indeed

your parting is a grievous loss, if you only knew.

on some white nights, stands in for you.

You pour upon the earth's face a light like

molten silver flowing over the plains.

My heart singles you out for love, O full moon,

because you are beautiful among the shining stars.

For you, O full moon, are the nearest star rising

above the earth, coursing and roaming around it,

just as the earth makes a circuit each year

around the sun in its circling, and a year goes by.

    You have united beauty that awed my gaze with splendor;

so what, O full moon, could I say of you?

where an ignoramus argues with the learned.

has the two Farqad stars' white light for a guide?

for there is no way to it while I live.

in the sight of a full moon whose time to set had come.

whose cooing sounds in the freshness of morning.

for it can no longer reach you.

and neglected, with no one at all to provide for them.

I listened to one of them, a wife

of his, writhing in grief and saying:
