آثرت حتفك بعد اليأس تنتحر

في حين كان اليك الشعب يفتقر

After despair, you chose your death, taking your own life,

at a time when the people stood in need of you.

ضحيت بالنفس والاقدار واجمة

من هول ما جئته والليل معتكر

You sacrificed your life, and the fates stood speechless

at the horror of what you had done, while the night was murky.

ما كان يرنو الى ما كنت تنفذه

الا السماء والا الانجم الزهر

None gazed upon what you were carrying out

but the sky and the radiant stars.

فهل سئمت حياة طال شقوتها

حتى قذفت عليها النار تختصر

Had you then grown so weary of a life of prolonged misery,

that you hurled fire upon it to cut it short?

وقر بعد قليل كل نابضة

الا دما عربياً كان ينفجر

And soon every throbbing vein fell still,

save Arab blood that kept gushing forth.

وما انتحارك بدع في جرائته

فطالما يئس الاحرار فانتحروا

Nor was your suicide unprecedented in its daring,

for free men have often despaired and taken their own lives.

بقيت في الحزب مثل النجم مؤتلقا

لا كالذين اختفوا من بعدما ظهروا

You remained in the party, radiant as a star,

not like those who vanished after they had appeared.

وكنت هاديهم فيما به اختلفوا

تقيلهم كلما في سيرهم عثروا

And you were their guide in matters over which they differed,

lifting them up whenever they stumbled on their way.

وكنت للشعب رأساً في حكومته

والرأس فيه الحجى والسمع والبصر

And you were the people's head in their government,

and in the head reside reason, hearing, and sight.

ما من سلام لشعب ذي مسالمة

اذا تعدّوا عليه فهو يعتذر

There is no peace for a peaceable people

who themselves apologize when others wrong them.

الشعب اعياه ذود عن حقيقته

والشعب اعزل لا ناب ولا ظفر

The people are worn out defending their rights,

and the people are unarmed, with neither fang nor claw.

ما ان له نشب ما ان له غضب

ما ان له سند ما ان له وزر

They have no wealth; they have no anger.

They have no support; they have no refuge.

لم يبق في نفسه الا حشاشتها

وفي حشاشتها استقلاله وطر

Nothing is left in their soul but its last remnant of life,

and in that remnant lives their desire for independence.
