To You, my God, with weeping that I deftly fashion

into verse, I humbly pray whenever calamity befalls me.

    To You, in the dark of night, at sea should it rage;

to You I flee for refuge whenever my heart is terrified.

I have worshipped You, not knowing—nor has anyone known—

whether Your mystery or nature's breast is vaster.

I read Your praised name in the night and the morning light,

when the sun hides itself, when the sun rises.

Thus I ascertained that the universe is sustained by God,

and became certain that God is the universe's creator,

and that You are meaning, and creation its expression,

and that You are beauty, and nature a veil.

Does man remember You in hardship, hungry,

and forget You in ease, when he eats his fill?

Exalted are You! You are God, all-powerful, so no

forgetfulness harms You, nor does remembrance benefit You.
