    تضيء من الآمال فيها كواكبُ

    Deep darkness enveloped my night of despair;

within it, stars of hope shine.

At last, clouds came from my cares,

and those clouds veiled my hopes.

Nothing appeared to me but thickening sorrow,

and nothing showed itself but darkness piled on darkness.

Oh, what a pitch-black night it was there!

Its terrors narrowed every path before me.

It lasted until, in its sky, there appeared to me

on the horizon a false dawn of my hope.

I say to my eye when its tears have dried:

Have you held them back when calamities bereaved us?

Those whose faces you love to behold have vanished,

as though they were bright stars sinking from sight.

I never thought that, after an hour,

your streaming tears would dry like this.

Your tearlessness, my eye, now that separation has come

without any appointment with them, is unfitting.

For this tearlessness and its duration,

I blame you, my eye, and I reproach you.

I am not pleased with you, my eye, now they are gone,

because you have not done what duty requires.

And to my heart, after it turned back,

when their caravans and mounts had departed:

    I knew you to be walking behind them, O heart;

so tell me why you have returned, O heart.

I asked you, my heart, about the reason

for which you returned; I marvel at your return.

Why do you kneel, trembling and changed,

and why do you gaze silently, without answering?

Have you come to console me because I am sorrowful,

and because I am bereaved and disappointed?

It spoke in a voice whose strings sorrow had shaken,

so they rang with a resonance that calamities held in awe.

I followed them until they lay in pits,

and a screen of earth concealed them from me.

I stood at the graves where they had vanished,

calling, but no one returned an answer.

So I came to tell you of their state; it

has grieved me, so command me to do whatever you wish.

My counsel is that we go together to their graves.

I said to it: O heart, your counsel is sound.

    فلي بين هاتيك القبور مآرب

    You are right—yes, O heart—in what you have proposed;

for I have wishes among those graves.

Walk ahead of me, to guide me

to them; so we went, with longing as our companion.

When we arrived, it pained my eye to see

graves there, effaced by a gravel-bearing wind.

Rows of graves were aligned in the open,

as a scribe embellishes a heading on a page.

Graves in which shy young maidens slept,

and their tresses slept there beside them.

Then my soul surged there with searing anguish,

and I spoke, addressing those graves:

    فما فعلت تلك الحسان الكواعب

    Here within you, lovely maidens with budding breasts have vanished;

so what has become of those lovely maidens with budding breasts?

And what has become of those necks in the earth,

and what has become of those breastbones in the dust?

To whom do their eyes now gesture within you,

and those brows, in concert with their wide eyes?

    فمن أين جاءتها تصيب المعاطب

    Lofty palaces had been their strongholds;

so from where did deadly perils come to strike them?

Each day there was a wish for attire,

for them, expressed through it in whatever suited them.

But today, to my misery, they have ended—

those desires—in a garment of shrouds.

    أهذي لهاتيك المبادي عواقب

    At first they were like the flowers of spring;

are these the ends of those beginnings?

Death's hand has snatched them from my life,

as a robber steals a necklace of spaced beads.

There my eyes poured forth their tears,

and they streamed down my cheeks.

There, from my soul and in all sincerity,

I wished that death would draw near.

I looked at my heart, which was beside me,

and behold, it was melting from overwhelming sorrow.

So I tasted the heart's molten substance, then poured it

upon a grave where my beloved lay hidden.

Within me I found consolation like a temple

whose sides had collapsed, one after another.

My reason forsook me, in dread of my ruin,

and fled far from me into the wilderness.

I grew angry with the days, with medicine, and with wealth,

and said to them: I reproach you all.

The world grew desolate, as though its houses,

in my eyes, were ruins, even if they were palaces.

I stayed until night came creeping,

and in my eyes the surroundings were darker than it.

Then I returned home, and deep within my breast

was a blazing flame of agonizing sorrow.

And on my return I had neither reason nor

consolation, nor a heart to keep me company,

only a breath, repeated within my chest,

coming and going all through the night.

Death will smile in my face, as though it were

a lover who consoles, or a friend who keeps watch,

and will overtake me before morning and its rising,

so I shall escape the sorrow that wears me down.
