Proclaim with your own tongues of fire

    The thoughts within your skulls.

March toward your goals with daring,

Like a roaring torrent, and like a whirlwind.

Rise against customs in furious revolt,

And rebel even against the fates.

All of you, be masters of yourselves,

For this age is the master of the ages.

And press forward, leaping, to catch up

With the illustrious front-runners on the racecourse.

As for your negligence, its very existence wounds

The pride of Yaʿrub and Nizār in the grave.

    يا للضعيف به من الجبار

    Life is nothing but unceasing strife;

Alas for the weak in it, at the tyrant's hands!

    والويل كل الويل للخوار

    Victory belongs to the steadfast, the bold of heart;

    And woe—utter woe—to the fainthearted.

O greybeards, you are not fit for battle; fall back!

And hurry, young men—then hurry again!

Do not accept in religion what they recount,

Unless it proves true upon examination.

Indeed, all certainty lies in direct witnessing,

And doubt—all doubt—lies in the virtuous.

    حتام تختالون في الاطمار

    Cast off the old, and clothe yourselves in the new;

How long will you strut about in rags?

And slip free from the yoke of every superstition,

    Senseless, casting rust upon thought.

And free yourselves from the fetter of every creed,

Black, with no guidance for the night traveler.

Speak the truth aloud, and proclaim

To the people the secrets it contains.

In concealing it from them, if you reflect,

Lie dangers not found in disclosure.

It is a lovely custom; if we pay no heed

To its beauty, it will pass to others.

Shall we abase it and heap hatred upon it?

Oh, the ignorance—and oh, the shame!

Indeed, truths are beautiful as morning

To beholders, and naked as the stars.

Indeed, I see a dawn whose face has brightened,

And I recognize the dawn by its lights.

Shall I see the morning and not sing out on high?

Then I am indeed a stone among stones.
