    فالظلم يقتلنا والعدل يحيينا

    Be measured in oppression, lightening and easing it;

for oppression kills us, and justice gives us life.

O ruler, in whose hand lie these people's affairs,

so your night has turned white, and our nights have turned black.

Did it please you that we were ignorant of all knowledge,

in an age when humankind had crossed the fields of endeavor?

Did it please you that we kept silent about our demands?

O master of affairs, what pleases you hurts us.

The outcome of your path is not praiseworthy.

Make changes if you wish to improve conditions.

Have mercy on people's hearts, which, when they thirst

for justice one day, oppression gives them foul pus to drink.

You have become ruler; be lenient, for we are a people

whom nothing but the beauty of justice satisfies.

How many women have had their husbands unjustly slain,

and begun shedding tears they had once held back!

O king—may God soften the heart within you—

who amasses wealth, but from our labors!

Under his rule, injustice has made our eyes weep

blood, and what made us weep makes him laugh.

And how many young men among the free have perished,

and have become sacrificial offerings to decrees.

    فالملك قبلك قد ربى سلاطينا

    No sultan ever oppressed his subjects;

for kingship before you had nurtured sultans.

They were compassionate fathers to the people,

and on their thrones, kings and khagans.

And in the days of their rule, the people

did not shortchange others on the scales.

And do you see anything but prosperity and happiness,

if you turn briefly toward our past?

    كنا سعدنا على أيامها حينا

    A reign flourishing through justice has ended;

we were happy for a time in its days.

You have indeed promulgated temporary laws,

yet appointed no one to enforce the laws.

The hearts of the governors you send have hardened,

as though God had created no tenderness in them.

You find them fools when there is good to be done,

but in wrongdoing you find them devils.

Our life has been muddied by increasing oppression,

until its water turned to mud within its cup.

And in the realm, justice beneath which one shelters was lost,

amid the turning of blind eyes by the bribed and the bribers.

The subjects are sheep, for whom

your despotic officials sharpen the knives.

How often they pledged to bring justice,

but, heedless, avoided fulfilling their pledge.

    فالكذب ليس بمحمود وإن زينا

    O wicked governor, do not make a lying promise;

for lying is not praiseworthy, even when embellished.

    Every day you encounter a festival of death;

by God, what you encounter, O my soul!

O sun, do not brighten our zenith with your light,

for that fills our governor's heart with rage.

And you, O wind, if you have regard for us,

then do not blow openly in our valley.

What blame is there for one who breathes in justice, content

with a waft of it, if he spurns fragrant herbs?

O justice, a glance from you makes us happy.

O justice, a smile from you is enough for us.

If you are absent from us, no life is sweet to us,

nor does the east wind's breeze console us when it blows.

O justice, one loved for his beauties

does not thus forsake the people who love him.

O you whose nights have grown short with amusement,

remember that our nights have grown long.

Your striving to attain justice soon,

O soul, is nothing but wishes we have made.

Ignorance has journeyed away, except from our homes,

and knowledge has borne fruit, except in our regions.

Evil came upon us only through our negligence.

Oppression engulfed us only because we looked the other way.

Even if all prestige were stored in ignorance,

we would profit by it neither in worldly life nor in faith.

We must undo the knots that have been tied

by captivity's hand upon our hands—with our own hands.

Those who preferred to kill themselves

to flee oppression were not mad.

Death is better—may God hasten its hour—

than the life that has come to torment us.
