Gandhi is held in esteem at every gathering,

And no one faults him for his nakedness.

Who among people, save one afflicted with folly,

Would disparage a sword because the sword is bare?

How lovely are Layla and the songs that

she sings in the mornings and evenings.

I am enamored of her, whether she sings aloud

or her singing comes like the whisper of nights.

I do not cross Layla's mind,

And no one but Layla crosses mine.

And to this day, there has not bloomed

A flower for me in the garden of hopes.

I shall draw near her, even if it is hard

For those like me to approach those like her.

    My eye will see her face up close;

You, O her face, are dear to the eye.

    Layla was not cowardly, except

That she fears the sting of words.

Ah, Layla, if you persist in estrangement,

Then what shall I say to the reproachers?
