وإني أرى بيني وبين جماعة

وإني أرى بيني وبين جماعة

من الناس في العصر الذي ضمّنا بونا

من الناس في العصر الذي ضمّنا بونا

And I see between myself and a group

I see between me and a group

of people, in the age that brought us together, a gulf.

Of people in this age that gathered us

فهم عبدوا العادات لا يخرقونها

فهم عبدوا العادات لا يخرقونها

وإن كابدوا منها الخسارة والغَبنا

وإن كابدوا منها الخسارة والغَبنا

For they have worshipped customs and do not break them,

They worshipped customs, never violating them

even if they endure loss and injustice through them.

Even if they suffered loss and injustice from them

وإني ارى أن اختراق ستارها

وإني ارى أن اختراق ستارها

يهون لدى ذي حكمة سبر الكونا

يهون لدى ذي حكمة سبر الكونا

And I see that piercing their veil

And I see that violating its veil

is easy for one endowed with wisdom who has fathomed the universe.

Is easy for one with wisdom that probed the universe

وإني أجازى المرء من جنس فعله

وإني أجازى المرء من جنس فعله

فأعطيه بالوزن الذي كالنى وزنا

فأعطيه بالوزن الذي كالنى وزنا

And I repay a person in kind for his deed,

And I reward a person in kind for their deed

so I give him a weight equal to the weight he meted out to me.

So I give them in the same weight they gave me

فعندي له سب إذا هو سنى

فعندي له سب إذا هو سنى

وعندي له حسن الثناء إذا أثنى

وعندي له حسن الثناء إذا أثنى

So I have abuse for him if he [insults me],

So in my eyes they have insult if they insulted me

and I have fine praise for him if he offers praise.

And in my eyes they have good praise if they praised

فأجزى بإحساني الذي كان محسنا

فأجزى بإحساني الذي كان محسنا

وأطعن فيمن جاء يوسعني طعنا

وأطعن فيمن جاء يوسعني طعنا

So with my kindness I repay the one who has been kind,

So I repay with my kindness those who were kind

and I assail whoever comes to heap attacks upon me.

And I criticize those who came to slander me

وإني بهذا إن تأمل منصف

وإني بهذا إن تأمل منصف

لأسلُكُ نهجاً في الطبيعة قد سُنّا

لأسلُكُ نهجاً في الطبيعة قد سُنّا

And I, in this—if a fair-minded person reflects—

And in this, if a fair one contemplates

surely follow a path already laid down in nature.

I follow a path in nature already paved

ولست أبالي بالكثيرين أحسنوا

ولست أبالي بالكثيرين أحسنوا

بشأني اعتقاداً أم اساءوا بي الظنَّا

بشأني اعتقاداً أم اساءوا بي الظنَّا

And I care nothing for the many, whether they think well

And I do not care if many were good

of me or think ill of me.

To my affairs out of belief or suspected me
