You, in forsaking us and in this shunning,
You in our separation and this estrangement
O Sulayma, have overstepped every bound.
O Salima, you have crossed every limit

O Sulayma, you have gone too far in estrangement; be gentle,
O Salima, you were too harsh in estranging
O Sulayma, with the love-stricken lover.
O Salima, with a lover in anguish sunk

You have a body so delicate it almost flows,
You have a body that almost melts with gentleness
And a heart harder than a boulder.
And a heart harder than solid rock

Will soon drag me to the graves.
Will soon drag me to ruin and destruction

O Sulayma, do not cut the cord of my union with you,
O Salima, do not sever the rope of my connection
And cut, if you wish, the cord of my jugular vein.
And sever, if you wish, the rope of my veins

Hasten so I die in you, otherwise
Then grant me a glance from afar.
Allow me a glance from afar

How did you deem it right to undo pledges
How could you justify breaking promises
That you yourself sealed before the witnesses?
That you made before witnesses?

قدindeed لعمريby my life أشمتّyou made gloat قلبthe heart الحسودof the envious one
By what you have allowed, O Sulayma,
By whom you justified it, O Salima
You have, by my life, made the envious one's heart gloat.
For my life, the jealous' hearts gloat

Excuse me, even with a promise, for I
O Sulayma, am indeed content with promises.
O Salima, am content with promises

How sweet is the life we could spend
If only we could find someone to restore its days!
If we found someone to renew its promise

Then again I sigh for those days.
Then alas from me for those promises

Indeed, Sulayma, tall and slender of figure,
The swaying of the lithe figure, Salima
Has, by my life, been miserly; so, O eye, be generous!
For my life, was stingy, so my eyes pour generously

Long have I reproached time for assailing me
Long has been my rebuke of a time that cast me
With calamities that turn a newborn's head gray.
With disasters that equal the slain Al-Walid's head

Many a night I spent sleepless in longing for you
With sorrow present, yet absent from my own awareness.
Present in worry, absent in my witnesses

I watch the stars in it, my star Al-Thurayya
With eyes that have not tasted the flavor of sleep,
With eyes that never tasted the sweetness of sleep

Sorrows that diminish the edge of the meadows
And worries that devour the heart of iron.
