I remembered, O Salma, our nights that
I remember, O Salma, our nights when
passed at Hazwa—may the clouds water Hazwa.
Hazwa watered Hazwa with drizzling rain,
فأكرمhow splendid, then بهاتيكthose اللياليthe nights ليالياas nights
فأكرم بهاتيك الليالي لياليا
وأكرمand how splendid بحزوىHazwa عندهاduring them منas محلةa dwelling place
وأكرم بحزوى عندها من محلة
How splendid, then, those nights were,
So generously bless those nights, nights of grace,
and how splendid a dwelling Hazwa was then!
And generously bless Hazwa among them as a station.

My soul has indeed fallen ill from its excessive longing
My soul has been sick with excessive yearning
for them, and to this day it has not recovered.
For them, and till this day has not recovered,

And I tried, O Salma, by every means,
And I have tried, O Salma, by every means
to bring it solace, but it found none.
To console it, but it will not be consoled.

I hope to meet death every hour,
I hope for the encounter with death every hour
for my soul has wearied of life and grown tired of it.
For my soul is tired of life and fed up.
