وينام تحت الارض ثم ينام
Does Yusuf tire of his palace above the Tigris,
Yamil built his palace overlooking the Tigris,
and sleep beneath the earth, then sleep?
And now he sleeps underground and rests.

Nothing visible of him remains today but
Nothing of him remains visible today except
a grave—may greetings and peace be upon it.
His tombstone, with greetings and peace.

As for Yusuf's tomb, it is like
As for Yusuf's shrine, it is as if
a sheath, and Yusuf within the tomb is a sword.
It sheathed Yusuf in the shrine like a sword.

He used to smile at the affection between us
an ancient bond from the beautiful past.
A covenant from the beautiful past still stands.

O lord, swept away by the wind of death,
O master, the wind of misery blew him away,
the days broke their pledge with your death.
His death broke the covenant of time.

You suddenly parted from your companions out of weariness,
You left our company suddenly out of boredom
so you departed without bidding farewell, while they remained.
So you departed without farewells while they stayed.

The newspapers did not write the death notice; rather,
The newspapers did not publish an obituary, rather
the pens shed their tears over you.
Their pens shed tears for you.

Are you in there, that noble one?

Life eagerly builds its hopes,
Life eagerly builds its hopes
and death, at its heels, is a destroyer.
While death demolishes in its wake.
