The death-herald spoke openly of Jamil, not in veiled words.
The mourner broke me with the news of my lost love,
And he lay in Egypt, never to return.
And settled in Egypt with no intention to return.

And indeed I would trail my hem in Wadi al-Qura,
He let down his robe in the valley of villages,
Intoxicated among fields and date palms.
Wandering between farms and palm trees.

The death-herald came early with news of a horseman of high resolve,
The mourner wept for a valiant horseman,
A hero who, when battle was decreed, humbled his foes.
A hero who charges when war calls.
قوميrise بُثَينَةُButhayna فَاِندُبيand then lament بِعَويلِwith wailing
وَاِبكيand weep خَليلَكِyour beloved دونَto the exclusion of كُلَّevery خَليلِbeloved
Rise, Buthayna, and lament with wailing,
People of Buthaina, mourn and wail,
And weep for your beloved, rather than any other beloved.
Weep for your friend above all friends.
