O Umm Abd al-Malik, cut me off!
Then make your break with me plain, or maintain ties with me.
أَبكيI weep وَماand what يُدريكِcan tell you ماwhat يُبكينيmakes me weep
أَبكيI weep حِذاراًfor fear أَنthat تُفارِقينيyou will leave me
I weep—and how can you know what makes me weep?
I weep for fear that you will leave me

إِنَّindeed بَنيthe sons of عَمِّكِyour paternal uncle أَوعَدونيhave threatened me
And put someone farther away than I ahead of me.
Indeed, your paternal cousins have threatened me
أَنto يَقطَعواcut off رَأسيmy head إِذاif لَقونيthey meet me
وَيَقتُلونيand kill me ثُمَّthen لاnot يَدونيpay blood money for me
To cut off my head if they meet me,
And kill me, then pay no blood money for me.
كَلّاno indeed وَرَبِّby the Lord of البَيتِthe House لَوif لَقونيthey met me

No! By the Lord of the House, if they met me,
In pairs or singly, they would leave me to one another.
قَدindeed عَلِمَhave learned الأَعداءُthe enemies أَنَّthat دونيbarring access to me

The enemies know that barring their way to me
Are blows like the urine-spurts of dark, pregnant she-camels.
أَلاshould not أَسُبُّI revile القَومَthe people إِذsince سَبّونيthey reviled me
بَلىyes indeed وَماand by whatever مَرَّhas passed عَلىover دَفينِDafin
Should I not revile those people, since they reviled me?
Yes—by whatever has passed over Dafin,
وَسابِحاتٍand by swift coursers بِلِوىat the bend of الحَجونِal-Hajun
قَدindeed جَرَّبونيthey have tested me ثُمَّthen جَرَّبونيthey have tested me
And by the swift coursers at the bend of al-Hajun:
They have tested me, then tested me again,
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen شابواthey grew gray وَشَيَّبونيand made me gray
أَخزاهُمُmay He disgrace them اللَهُGod وَلاand not يُخزينيdisgrace me
Until they grew gray and turned me gray.
May God disgrace them, but not disgrace me!
أَشباهُthe likes of أَعيارٍwild asses عَلىbeside مَعينِflowing water

أَحسَسنَthey sensed حِسَّthe sound of أَسَدٍa lion حَرونِunyielding
Like wild asses beside flowing water,
They sensed the sound of an unyielding lion,
فَهُنَّso they يَضرِطنَfart مِنَfrom اليَقينِcertainty
أَناI جَميلٌJamil فَتَعَرَّفونيso recognize me
So they fart, certain of their doom.
I am Jamil: recognize me!
وَماand not تَقَنَّعتُI veiled myself فَتُنكِرونيso that you fail to recognize me
وَماand not أُعَنّيكُمI trouble you لِتَسأَلونيfor you to ask me
I have not veiled myself for you to fail to recognize me,
Nor put you to the trouble of asking me.

I trace my lineage to a grinding host of raiders,

A deep flood that crushes heavy ships,
With swelling crests, arching when it comes into sight.

Men's fetters come undone before me.
