O friend, hold back some of your reproach.

Indeed, my hopes are for meeting Umm al-Miswar.

And it is as though her night visitor, amid successive draughts of sleep,

While the star draws near to setting late at night,

Inhales the scent of wine blended

With fragrant musk or powdered ambergris.

I keep faith with you in your absence; it pleases me—

If you but knew—to have you spoken of well.

A day when I neither see a messenger of yours

Nor meet you seems like months to me.

Oh, would that I met death suddenly,

    If the day of meeting you has not been decreed;

Or could find the fortitude to put thoughts of you aside,

So some of my yearning might subside, and you might reflect.

If you knew what love I hide within,

You would excuse me—or wrong me if you did not.

By God, the heart has no knowledge of her

Except conjectures and the informant's words.

    حَدَثٌ لَعَمرُكِ رائِعٌ أَن تُهجَري

    Do not think I forsook you willingly;

By your life, your being forsaken is a dreadful thing.

And the mourning women will surely weep for me; and if I reveal

Your secret openly one day, I shall not be excused.

My heart loves you as long as I live; and if I die,

My shade will follow your shade among the graves.

Indeed, I look to you for what you promised,

As the poor man looks to the rich man of great wealth.

Debts are repaid, yet no promise is kept

By this debtor of ours, though he is not insolvent.

You and the promise you make me are

Only like lightning from a cloud that has not rained.

    فَمَتى هَجَرتيهِ فَمِنهُ تَكَثَّري

    I counseled my heart, but it rejected my counsel;

So whenever you forsake it, boast of it.
