أَلَمhave you not تَسأَلِasked الدارَthe dwelling القَديمَةَold هَلwhether لَهاit has
بِأُمِّof Umm حُسَينٍHusayn بَعدَsince عَهدِكَyour last visit مِنany عَهدِknowledge
Have you not asked the old dwelling whether it has
Did you not ask the old house, after you left,
any knowledge of Umm Husayn since your last visit?
If it still belongs to Umm Hussein?
سَليask الركبَthe riders هَلwhether عُجناwe turned لِمَغناكِtoward your dwelling مَرَّةًonce
صُدورَchests of المَطاياthe mounts وَهيَwhile they موقَرَةٌheavily laden تَخديstride swiftly
Ask the riders whether we ever turned toward your dwelling
Ask the caravan if they have ever stopped
the chests of our mounts, heavily laden as they strode swiftly.
At your abode, where the camels kneel.
وَهَلand did فاضَتِoverflowed العَينُthe eye الشَروقُbrimming with tears بِمائِهاwith its water
مِنfor اجلِكِyour sake حَتّىuntil اِخضَلَّbecame soaked مِنfrom دَمعِهاits tears بَرديmy cloak
And did the tear-brimming eye overflow with its water
Did the teary eyes overflow with their water
for your sake, until my cloak was drenched in its tears?
Until my cloak turned green from their tears?
وَإِنّيand I indeed لَأَستَجريI indeed rouse to flight لَكِfor you الطَيرَthe birds جاهِداًstriving hard
لَتَجريso they may fly بِيُمنٍwith good fortune مِنfrom لِقائِكِmeeting you أَوor سَعدِluck
And I strive to set the birds flying for you,
I implore the birds to visit you in earnest,
that their flight may augur a blessed meeting with you, or good fortune.
That they may bring glad tidings of meeting you.
وَإِنّيand I indeed لَأَستَبكيI indeed bring myself to tears إِذاwhen الركبُthe riders غَرَّدواsang
بِذِكراكِin remembrance of you أَنthat يَحياcomes alive بِكِthrough you الركبُthe riders إِذas يَحديchants to the camels
And I bring myself to tears when the riders sing
I weep when the caravan sings your name,
of you, at how the riders come alive through you as they chant to the camels.
Wishing that the caravan lives when it comes near.
فَهَلso will تَجزِيَنّيrepay me أُمُّUmm عَمروٍAmr بِودِّهاwith her affection
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّذيwhat أُخفيI conceal بِهاconcerning her فَوقَabove ماwhat أُبديI reveal
Will Umm Amr then repay me with her affection?
Will Umm ‘Amr reward me for my affection?
For what I conceal concerning her exceeds what I reveal.
For my love for her surpasses what is seen.
وَكُلُّand every مُحِبٍّlover لَمhas not يَزِدgone further فَوقَbeyond جُهدِهِhis utmost effort
وَقَدyet I have زِدتُهاI gave her more فيin الحُبِّlove مِنّيfrom me عَلىbeyond الجُهدِutmost effort
And no lover has gone beyond his utmost effort,
Every lover only does what he can,
yet I have given her love beyond my utmost effort.
Yet my love for her exceeds all effort.
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) دَنَتshe draws near زِدتُI grow اِشتِياقاًin longing وَإِنand if نَأَتshe goes far away
جَزِعتُI despaired لِنَأيِat the remoteness of الدارِthe dwelling مِنهاfrom her وَلِلبُعدِand at the distance
When she draws near, my longing grows; and if she goes far away,
When she draws near, my longing only grows,
I despair at her distant dwelling and at the separation.
When she is far, I despair for her distance.
أَبىrefused القَلبُthe heart إِلّاanything but حُبَّlove of بَثنَةَBathna لَمdid not يُرِدdesire

My heart would accept only love for Bathna; it desired
My heart insisted on loving only Buthaina,
no one else, yet the heart's love for Bathna avails nothing.
For the heart’s love of Buthaina does no good.
تَعَلَّقَclung to روحيmy soul روحَهاher soul قَبلَbefore خَلقِناour creation
وَمِنand from بَعدِafter ماwhen كُنّاwe were نِطافاًdrops of seed وَفيand in المَهدِthe cradle
My soul clung to hers before our creation,
My soul clung to hers before we were created,
and after we were drops of seed, and in the cradle.
And after we were drops and then infants.
فَزادَso it grew كَماas زدناwe grew فَأَصبَحَand it became نامِياًflourishing
وَلَيسَand is not إِذاwhen متناwe die بِمُنتَقَضِbroken العَهدِthe covenant
So it grew as we grew, and continued to flourish,
It grew as we grew until it flourished,
and when we die, its covenant will not be broken.
Not ceasing when we die and turn to dust.
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it باقٍenduring عَلىthrough كُلِّevery حالَةٍstate
وَزائِرُناand our visitor فيin ظُلمَةِdarkness of القَبرِthe grave وَاللحدِand the burial niche
But it endures through every state,
Remaining through all states,
and will visit us in the darkness of the grave and the burial niche.
Visiting us in the darkness of our tombs.
وَماand not وَجَدَتfelt وَجديmy anguish بِهاfor her أُمُّa mother of واحِدٍan only child
وَلاnor وَجَدَfelt النَهدِيُّal-Nahdi وَجديmy anguish عَلىfor هِندِHind
No mother of an only child has felt my anguish for her,
No one found my passion, not even Hind’s lover,
nor has al-Nahdi felt for Hind the anguish I feel.
Nor Orwa when he was parted from his love.
وَلاnor وَجَدَfelt العُذرِيُّof Udhra عُروَةُUrwa إِذwhen قَضىhe died
كَوَجديlike my anguish وَلاnor مَنanyone who كانَwas قَبليbefore me وَلاnor بَعديafter me
Nor did Urwa of Udhra, when he died, feel
Those who have died have found peace,
anguish like mine, nor anyone before me or after me.
While my heart finds no serenity or guidance.
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that مَنwhoever قَدalready ماتَhas died صادَفَfound راحَةًrest
وَماand there is no لِفُؤاديfor my heart مِنany رَواحٍrespite وَلاnor رُشدِgood sense
Yet whoever has died has found rest,
Her delicate skin is scratched by the ripples
while my heart has neither respite nor good sense.
When she bathes her smooth body in the water.
يَكادُalmost فَضيضُspray of الماءِthe water يَخدِشُscratches جلدهاher skin
إِذاwhen اِغتَسَلَتshe bathes بِالماءِin water مِنbecause of رِقَّةِdelicacy of الجِلدِthe skin
The spray of water almost scratches her skin
I yearn for the breeze from her bosom,
when she bathes in water, so delicate is her skin.
As Idris yearned for the eternal Garden.
وَإِنّيand I indeed لَمُشتاقٌindeed yearning إِلىfor ريحِthe scent of جَيبِهاher neckline
كَماas اِشتاقَyearned إِدريسٌIdris إِلىfor جَنَّةِthe Garden of الخُلدِeternity
And I yearn for the scent of her neckline,
A caring brother blamed me, though dear to me:
as Idris yearned for the Garden of Eternity.
“Awaken from your infatuation with Buthaina!”
لَقَدindeed لامَنيhe reproached me فيهاover her أَخٌa brother ذوhaving قَرابَةٍkinship
حَبيبٌdear إِلَيهِto him فيin مَلامَتِهِhis reproach رُشديmy good sense
Indeed, a brother, a kinsman, reproached me over her,
I said: “God has ordained what you see,
my good sense being dear to him as he reproached me.
Can His decree be rejected?”
وَقالَand he said أَفِقcome to your senses حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen أَنتَyou هائِمٌlovesick
بِبَثنَةَwith Bathna فيهاabout her قَدat times تُعيدُyou repeat وَقَدand at times تُبديyou declare
And he said: Come to your senses! How long will you remain infatuated
“Be it misguidance or wisdom to love her,
with Bathna, now repeating your words about her, now declaring them anew?
I have come to it beyond intention.”
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him فيهاconcerning her قَضىdecreed اللَهُGod ماwhat تَرىyou see
عَليَّupon me وَهَلand is there فيماin what قَضىdecreed اللَهُGod مِنany رَدِّreversal
So I said to him: Concerning her, God decreed what you see
“A pact from God binds us,
upon me; can anything reverse what God has decreed?
There is no escape for one who breaks a vow to God.”
فَإِنso if كانَis رُشداًright guidance حُبُّهاloving her أَوor غِوايَةًerror
فَقَدthen indeed جِئتُهُI came to it ماnot كانَwas مِنّيfrom me عَلىby عَمدِdeliberate intent
So whether loving her is right guidance or error,
“By her goodness, I have not betrayed her,
I have come to it, but not deliberately.
Though I know not what she did after me.”
لَقَدindeed لَجَّheld fast ميثاقٌa covenant مِنَfrom اللَهِGod بَينَناbetween us
وَلَيسَand there is no لِمَنfor whoever لَمhas not يوفِkept faith لِلَّهِwith God مِنany عَهدِcovenant
A covenant from God has indeed held fast between us,
The slanderers only increased her glory to me,
and no covenant belongs to one who fails to keep faith with God.
Her affection remains with me still.
فَلاso no وَأَبيهاby her father الخَيرthe noble ماnot خُنتُI betrayed عَهدَهاher pledge
وَلاnor لِيَI have عِلمٌknowledge بِالَّذيof what فَعَلَتshe did بَعديafter me
No, by her noble father, I have not betrayed her pledge,
Are there others like me who suffer such love?
nor do I know what she has done since I left.
Or did I uniquely love among all people?
وَماand not زادَهاmade her more الواشونَthe slanderers إِلّاexcept كَرامَةًesteemed
عَلَيَّto me وَماand not زالَتceased مَوَدَّتُهاaffection for her عِنديwith me
And the slanderers have only made her dearer
Have lovers all suffered as I have for her love?
to me, and my affection for her has never faded.
Or has no one else felt the anguish I feel?
أَفيare there among الناسِpeople أَمثاليothers like me أَحَبَّloved فَحالُهُمso their state
كَحاليlike my state أَمor اَحبَبتُI loved مِنfrom بَينِهِمamong them وَحديalone
Are there among people others like me who have loved, whose state
When she is absent, my heart wanders to Najd,
is like mine, or have I alone among them loved?
When she is in Najd, my heart yearns for her.
وَهَلand do هَكَذاlikewise يَلقىexperience المُحِبّونَlovers مِثلَthe like of ماwhat
لَقيتُI experienced بِهاthrough her أَمor لَمhas not يَجِدfelt أَحَدٌanyone وَجديmy anguish
And do lovers likewise experience anything like what
I came to Banu Sa’d in full health,
I have experienced through her, or has no one felt my anguish?
Yet my heart’s illness was love of Banu Sa’d.
يَغورُgoes to the lowlands إِذاwhen غارَتshe goes to the lowlands فُؤاديmy heart وَإِنand if تَكُنshe is
بِنَجدٍin Najd يَهِمroams lovesick مِنّيwithin me الفُؤادُthe heart إِلىtoward نَجدِNajd
My heart goes to the lowlands when she goes there; and if she is
in Najd, the heart within me roams lovesick toward Najd.
أَتَيتُI came to بَنيthe sons of سَعدٍSa'd صَحيحاًhealthy مُسَلَّماًunharmed
وَكانَand was سَقامَsickness of القَلبِthe heart حُبُّlove of بَنيthe sons of سَعدِSa'd
I came to Banu Sa'd healthy and unharmed,
and love for Banu Sa'd was my heart's sickness.
