أَهاجَكَhas it stirred you أَمor لاnot بِالمَداخِلِat al-Madakhil مَربَعُa spring camp
وَدارٌand a dwelling بِأَجراعِon the sandy flats of الغَديرَينِal-Ghadirayn بَلقَعُdesolate
Has a spring camp at al-Madakhil stirred you, or not,
and a desolate dwelling on the sandy flats of al-Ghadirayn?
دِيارٌdwellings لِسَلمىof Salma إِذwhen نَحِلُّwe lodge بِهاin them مَعاًtogether
وَإِذand when نَحنُwe مِنهاfrom her بِالمَوَدَّةِfor affection نَطمَعُhope
Salma's dwellings, when we lodged there together,
and when we hoped for affection from her.
وَإِنand even if تَكُit be قَدalready شَطَّتhas grown distant نَواهاher destination وَدارُهاand her dwelling
فَإِنَّthen indeed النَوىseparation مِمّاamong things that تُشِتُّscatter وَتَجمَعُand unite
And even if her destination and dwelling have grown distant,
separation can both scatter and bring together.
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI lament لاnot إِلىto الناسِpeople حُبَّهاmy love for her
وَلاand no بُدَّescape مِنfrom شَكوىlamentation حَبيبٍa lover يُرَوَّعُwho is frightened
To God I lament my love for her, not to people,
and a frightened lover cannot help but lament.
أَلاwill you not تَتَّقينَfear اللَهَGod فيمَنfor the one whom قَتَلتِهِyou have slain him
فَأَمسىand so he became إِلَيكُمtoward you خاشِعاًhumble يَتَضَرَّعُhe implores
Will you not fear God for the one you have slain,
and who has become humble before you, pleading?
فَإِنfor if يَكُit be جُثمانيmy body بِأَرضin a land سِواكُمُapart from you
فَإِنَّthen indeed فُؤاديmy heart عِندكِwith you الدَهرَall time أَجمَعُin its entirety
For if my body is in a land apart from you,
my heart is surely with you for all time.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI say هَذاthis حينَthe time أَسلوI cease pining وَأَجتَريand I dare
عَلىto هَجرِهاforsaking her ظَلَّتkept لَهاfor her النَفسُthe soul تَشفَعُinterceding
Whenever I say, 'Now is the time to cease pining and dare
to forsake her,' my soul keeps pleading for her.
أَلاwill you not تَتَّقينَfear اللَهَGod فيin قَتلِkilling عاشِقٍa lover
لَهُhe has كَبِدٌa liver حَرّىburning عَلَيكِfor you تَقَطَّعُis torn apart
Will you not fear God in killing a lover
whose burning liver is torn to pieces for you?
غَريبٌa stranger مَشوقٌfilled with longing مولَعٌconsumed بِاِدِّكارِكُمwith remembering you
وَكُلُّand every غَريبِone far from الدارِhome بِالشَوقِwith longing مولَعُconsumed
A stranger, filled with longing, consumed with remembering you;
and everyone far from home is consumed by longing.
فَأَصبَحتُso I have become مِمّاfrom what أَحدَثَhas brought about الدَهرُtime موجِعاًanguished
وَكُنتُand I used to لِرَيبِbefore the calamities of الدَهرِtime لاnot أَتَخَشَّعُbow humbly
So I have become anguished by what time has brought,
though once I would not bow before time's calamities.
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord حَبِّبنيmake me dear إِلَيهاto her وَأَعطِنيand grant me
المَوَدَّةَaffection مِنهاfrom her أَنتَYou تُعطيgive وَتَمنَعُand withhold
So, my Lord, make me dear to her, and grant me
her affection; You give and withhold.
وَإِلّاand if not فَصَبِّرنيthen grant me patience وَإِنand even if كُنتُI am كارِهاًunwilling
فَإِنّيfor I am بِهاwith her ياO ذاPossessor of المَعارِجِthe ways of ascent مولَعُconsumed
Otherwise, grant me patience, though I am unwilling,
for I am consumed with love for her, O Lord of the ways of ascent.
وَإِنand if رمتُI seek نَفسيmyself كَيفَhow آتيI go about لِصَرمِهاsevering ties with her
وَرمتُand I seek صدوداًturning away ظَلَّتِkept العَينُthe eye تَدمَعُshedding tears
And if I seek a way to bring myself to break with her,
and seek to turn away, my eye keeps shedding tears.
جَزِعتُI was distraught حِذارَin dread of البَينِseparation يَومَthe day تَحَمَّلواthey departed
وَمَنand whoever كانَis مِثليlike me ياO بُثَينَةُButhayna يَجزَعُis distraught
I was distraught, dreading separation, the day they departed,
and anyone like me, O Buthayna, would be distraught.
تَمَتَّعتُI took delight مِنهاfrom her يَومَthe day بانواthey left بِنَظرَةٍin a glance
وَهَلand can عاشِقٌa lover مِنfrom نَظرَةٍa glance يَتَمَتَّعُfind delight
I took delight in a glance at her the day they left;
but can a lover find delight in a single glance?
كَفىit suffices حَزَناًas sorrow لِلمَرءِfor a man ماas long as عاشَhe lives أَنَّهُthat he
بِبَينِby separation from حَبيبٍa beloved لاnot يَزالُceases يُرَوَّعُto be terrified
It is sorrow enough for a man, as long as he lives, that he
is forever terrified by parting from a beloved.
فَواso alas حَزَناًsorrow لَوif only يَنفَعُbenefits الحزنُsorrow أَهلَهُits sufferers
وَواجَزَعاًand alas for anguish لَوif only كانَthere were لِلنَفسِfor the soul مَجزَعُan outlet for anguish
So, alas for sorrow—if only sorrow could help its sufferers!
And alas for anguish—if only the soul had an outlet for it!
فَأَيُّthen what فُؤادٍheart لاnot يَذوبُmelts لِماat what أَرىI see
وَأَيُّand what عُيونٍeyes لاnot تَجودُpour forth freely فَتَدمَعُand so shed tears
Then what heart would not melt at what I see,
and what eyes would not overflow and weep?
