Ah, can a time with Buthayna that has passed

and left a grief that never leaves you ever return?

And am I excused, then, for weeping over the one

for whom I find my love grows despite her estrangement?

And even if my soul tried to forsake her, it would not return

to solace, but would add longing upon longing.

For no critic has blamed me for her—if you knew her—

among the people without increasing my love for her.

So do not, you two, heap blame on me, for I am not the one

who established love among people, or tasted it alone.
