وَرُبَّand many a حِبالٍcords كُنتُI had أَحكَمتُI made firm عَقدَهاtheir knotting

أُتيحَ لَها واشٍ رَفيقٌ فَحَلَّها
And many were the cords whose knots I had tied fast;
a deft slanderer came their way and untied them.
فَعُدناso we became كَأَنّاas though we لَمnot يَكُنthere had been بَينَناbetween us هَوىًlove
فَعُدنا كَأَنّا لَم يَكُن بَينَنا هَوىً
وَصارَand became الَّذيthe one who حَلَّuntied الحِبالَthe cords هَوىًa beloved لَهاto her
وَصارَ الَّذي حَلَّ الحِبالَ هَوىً لَها
So we became as though no love had ever been between us,
and he who untied the cords became her beloved.

And they said, “We see, O Jamil, that she has changed,
and the slanderer has changed her.” I said, “Perhaps she has.”
