خَليلَيَّmy two friends عوجاturn aside, you two بِالمَحَلَّةِat the encampment مِنof جُملِJuml
وَأَترابِهاand her age-mates بَينَbetween الأُجَيفَرِal-Ujayfir فَالحَبلِand al-Habl
My two friends, turn aside at the encampment of Juml
And her age-mates, between al-Ujayfir and al-Habl.
نَقِفlet us stop بِمَغانٍat dwelling places قَدalready مَحاhas erased رَسمَهاtheir traces البِلىdecay
تُعاقِبُهاassail them in succession الأَيّامُthe days بِالريحِwith wind وَالوَبلِand heavy rain
Let us stop at dwellings whose traces decay has erased;
The days assail them in succession with wind and heavy rain.
فَلَوso if دَرَجَcrept النَملُthe ants الصِغارُtiny بِجِلدِهاover her skin
لَأَندَبَwould surely scar أَعلىthe surface of جِلدِهاher skin مَدرَجُthe passage of النَملِthe ants
So if tiny ants crept over her skin,
The ants' passage would scar the surface of her skin.
أَفيis it for أُمُّUmm (mother of) عَمروٍʿAmr تَعذُلانيyou two reproach me هُديتُماmay you two be guided
وَقَدand already تَيَّمَتshe has enslaved قَلبيmy heart وَهامَand became infatuated بِهاwith her عَقليmy mind
Do you two reproach me for Umm ʿAmr—may you be guided—
When she has enslaved my heart and my mind is lost in love with her?
وَأَحسَنُand the fairest خَلقِof the creatures of اللَهِGod جيداًin neck وَمُقلَةًand in eye
تُشَبَّهُshe is likened فيamong النِسوانِwomen بِالشادِنِto a gazelle fawn الطِفلِyoung
And the fairest of God's creatures in neck and eye
Is likened, among women, to a young gazelle fawn.
وَأَنتِand you لِعَينيto my eye قُرَّةٌa delight حينَwhen نَلتَقيwe meet
وَذِكرُكِand remembering you يَشفينيheals me إِذاwhen خَدِرَتhas gone numb رِجليmy leg
And you are a delight to my eye when we meet,
And remembering you heals me when my leg goes numb.
وَدَعand leave عَنكَaway from you جُملاًJuml لاno سَبيلَway إِلىto جُملِJuml
Awake from folly, O stubborn heart,
And give up Juml: there is no way to reach Juml.
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat أَلفاًa thousand دونَbetween me and بَثنَةَBathna كُلُّهُمall of them
غَيارىjealous وَكُلٌّand every one مُزمِعونَdetermined عَلىupon قَتليkilling me
And even if a thousand stood between me and Bathna, all of them
Jealous, and every one intent on killing me,
I would surely seek her إِمّاeither نَهاراًby day مُجاهِراًopenly
وَإِمّاor alternatively سُرىtraveling by night لَيلٍnight وَلَوand even if قَطَعواthey cut off رِجليmy leg
I would seek her out, either openly by day,
Or traveling by night, even if they cut off my leg.
