أَلَمَّvisited خَيالٌa vision مِنfrom بُثَينَةَButhayna طارِقُvisiting by night
عَلىdespite النَأيِthe distance مُشتاقٌyearning إِلَيَّfor me وَشائِقُand stirring longing
A vision of Buthayna came visiting by night,
Despite the distance, longing for me and stirring longing.
سَرَتshe traveled by night مِنfrom تِلاعِravines الحِجرِal-Hijr حَتّىuntil تَخَلَّصَتshe made her way through

She traveled by night from the ravines of al-Hijr until she made her way
To me, with al-Ash'arun and Ghafiq between us.
كَأَنَّas though فَتيتَpowdered fragments of المِسكِmusk خالَطَmingled with نَشرَهاher fragrance
تُغَلَّare perfumed بِهِwith it أَردانُهاher sleeves وَالمَرافِقُand the elbows
As though powdered musk had mingled with her fragrance,
Her sleeves and elbows are perfumed with it.
تَقومُshe rises إِذاwhen قامَتshe rose بِهِwith it مِنfrom فِراشِهاher bed
وَيَغدوand goes forth بِهِwith it مِنfrom حِضنِهاher bosom مَنwhoever تُعانِقُshe embraces
Whenever she rises from her bed, she rises with it,
And whoever she embraces leaves her bosom bearing it.

And your departure from Tayma is affliction and misery
For you, along with the longing that never departs.

Ah, she is not generous to one in love;
Rather, stinginess is her disposition and character.

To me, even though your ways are not faultless.
