مَلاحَةَthe sweetness of قَولٍwords يَومَon the day قالَتshe said وَمَعهَداand a familiar haunt
My heart recalled what it had not forgotten of her:
the sweetness of her words the day she spoke, and a familiar haunt:
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are تَهوىyou love أَوor تُريدُyou wish لِقاءَناto meet us
عَلىin خَلوَةٍprivacy فَاِضرِبthen appoint لَناfor us مِنكَon your part مَوعِداa meeting time
“If you are in love, or wish to meet us
in private, then set a time for us to meet you.”
فَقُلتُthen I said وَلَمand did not أَملِكI restrain سَوابِقَthe first rush of عَبرَةٍtears
أَأَحسَنُis there anything better? مِنthan هَذيthis العَشِيَّةِevening مَقعَداfor sitting
Then I said, unable to restrain the first rush of tears,
“Is there a better time to sit together than this evening?”
فَقالَتthen she said أَخافُI fear الكاشِحينَthe spiteful وَأَتَّقيand I guard against
عُيوناًeyes مِنَof الواشينَthe talebearers حَولِيَaround me شُهَّداwatching
She said, “I fear the spiteful, and guard against
the eyes of talebearers, watching all around me.”
