أَشاقَكَhas it stirred your longing? عالِجٌʿĀlij فَإِلىthen onward to الكَثيبِal-Kathīb (the dune)
إِلىto الداراتِal-Dārāt مِنamong هِضَبِthe hills of القَليبِal-Qalīb
Has ʿĀlij stirred your longing, and the land onward to al-Kathīb,
to al-Dārāt among the hills of al-Qalīb?
إِذاwhen حَلَّتshe settled بِمِصرَin Egypt وَحَلَّand settled أَهليmy people
بِيَثرِبَin Yathrib بَينَamong آطامٍfortresses وَلوبِand lava fields
When she dwells in Egypt, while my people dwell
in Yathrib, among fortresses and lava fields,
مُجاوِرَةًdwelling beside بِمَسكِنِهاin her dwelling نَحيباًlamentation
وَماand not هِيَshe حينَwhen تُسأَلُshe is asked مِنany مُجيبِone who answers
with lamentation as her neighbor in her dwelling,
yet she gives no answer when questioned.
وَأَهوىand dearest الأَرضِof lands عِنديto me حَيثُwhere حَلَّتshe settled
بِجَدبٍin barren land فيamong المَنازِلِthe dwelling places أَوor خَصيبِfertile land
And the land dearest to me is wherever she dwells,
whether its dwelling places are barren or fertile.
