تَنادىcalled to one another آلُthe kin of بَثنَةَBathna بِالرَواحِto depart
وَقَدand indeed تَرَكواthey left فُؤادَكَyour heart غَيرَnot صاحِsober
Bathna’s kin called to one another to depart,
And they have left your heart no longer sober.
فَياso, oh لَكَfor you مَنظَراًa sight وَمَسيرَand the journey of رَكبٍa caravan
شَجانيgrieved me حينَwhen أَبعَدَwent far away فيinto الفَياحِthe open plains
Ah, what a sight, and what a caravan’s journey,
That grieved me as it went far into the open plains!
وَياand oh لَكِfor you خُلَّةًa beloved ظَفِرَتshe gained mastery بِعَقليover my mind
كَماjust as ظَفِرَwon المُقامِرُthe gambler بِالقِداحِwith the lot-arrows
And oh, what a beloved you are, who has captured my mind,
As the gambler wins with the lot-arrows.
أُريدُI desire صَلاحَهاher well-being وَتُريدُand she desires قَتليmy being killed
وَشَتّىand far apart بَينَbetween قَتليmy being killed وَالصَلاحِand well-being
I desire her well-being, while she desires my death,
And how far apart are my death and well-being!
لَعَمرُby the life of أَبيكِyour father لاnot تَجِدينَyou will find عَهديmy fidelity
كَعَهدِكِlike your fidelity فيin المَوَدَّةِaffection وَالسَماحِand generosity
By your father’s life, you will not find my fidelity
Like yours in affection and generosity.
وَلَوand if أَرسَلتِyou sent تَستَهدينَyou seek as a gift نَفسيmy soul
أَتاكِcame to you بِهاwith it رَسولُكِyour messenger فيin سَراحِunhindered passage
And if you sent to ask for my soul as a gift,
Your messenger would bring it to you unhindered.
