وَماand never بَكَتِwept النِساءُthe women عَلىover قَتيلٍa slain man
بِأَشرَفَof greater nobility مِنthan قَتيلِthe victim of الغانِياتِthe beautiful women
And women have never wept over a slain man
No women ever wept at the death of a hero
Nobler than the man slain by the fair women.
More noble than the death of the singing girls -

رَدَدنَthey restored حَياتَهُhis life بِالمُسمِعاتِthrough the songstresses
So when he died of rapture and intoxication,
When he died of passion and drunkenness,
They restored his life through the songstresses.
They breathed life into him with their songs.
فَقامَso he rose يَجُرُّdragging عِطفَيهِhis two flanks خُماراًhungover

So he rose, dragging his flanks, hungover,
He arose pulling his cloak behind him
And it was not long since he had died.
Though death had been near and imminent.
