وَيَعجِبُني مِن جَعفَرٍ أَنَّ جَعفَراً

وَيَعجِبُني مِن جَعفَرٍ أَنَّ جَعفَراً

مُلِحٌّ عَلى قُرصٍ وَيَبكي عَلى جُملِ

مُلِحٌّ عَلى قُرصٍ وَيَبكي عَلى جُملِ

And what amazes me about Ja‘far is that Ja‘far

I love Ja’far for being cheerful and playful

insists on a round loaf and weeps for Juml.

Yet weeping for his beloved camel

فَلَو كُنتَ عُذرِيَّ العَلاقَةِ لَم تَكُن

فَلَو كُنتَ عُذرِيَّ العَلاقَةِ لَم تَكُن

بَطيناً وَأَنساكَ الهَوى كَثرَةَ الأَكلِ

بَطيناً وَأَنساكَ الهَوى كَثرَةَ الأَكلِ

So, had you been ‘Udhri in your love, you would not be

If you were my intimate friend, you would not be

potbellied, and passion would have made you forget eating so much.

So full of mud, and desire would not make you eat so much
