وَأَوَّلُand the first ماthat which قادَbrought المَوَدَّةَaffection بَينَناbetween us
وَأَوَّلُ ما قادَ المَوَدَّةَ بَينَنا
بِواديin the valley of بَغيضٍBaghid ياO بُثَينَButhayn سِبابُtrading insults
بِوادي بَغيضٍ يا بُثَينَ سِبابُ
And the first thing that brought affection between us
The first to lead affection between us
in the valley of Baghid, O Buthayn, was trading insults.
In a hateful valley, O Buthaina insults
وَقُلناand we said لَهاto her قَولاًan utterance فَجاءَتthen she came بِمِثلِهِwith its like
وَقُلنا لَها قَولاً فَجاءَت بِمِثلِهِ
لِكُلِّfor every كَلامٍutterance ياO بُثَينَButhayn جَوابُan answer
لِكُلِّ كَلامٍ يا بُثَينَ جَوابُ
And we said something to her, and she replied in kind;
And we told her something, and she responded likewise
for every utterance, O Buthayn, there is an answer.
To every word, O Buthaina, there is an answer
