وَإِنّي لَأَستَحيِي مِنَ الناسِ أَن أُرى

وَإِنّي لَأَستَحيِي مِنَ الناسِ أَن أُرى

رَديفاً لِوَصلٍ أَو عَلَيَّ رَديفُ

رَديفاً لِوَصلٍ أَو عَلَيَّ رَديفُ

And I am indeed ashamed before people to be seen

I'm ashamed before people when I'm seen

a second rider in love, or with another riding behind me,

As one who comes after a connection or one after whom comes connection

وَأَشرَبَ رَنقاً مِنكِ بَعدَ مَوَدَّةٍ

وَأَشرَبَ رَنقاً مِنكِ بَعدَ مَوَدَّةٍ

وَأَرضى بِوَصلٍ مِنكِ وَهُوَ ضَعيفُ

وَأَرضى بِوَصلٍ مِنكِ وَهُوَ ضَعيفُ

and to drink turbid water from you after affection,

And I drink the wine of your love after affection

and to be content with a bond from you when it is weak.

And I'm content with a connection from you, though it's weak

وَإِنِّيَ لِلماءِ المُخالِطِ لِلقَذى

وَإِنِّيَ لِلماءِ المُخالِطِ لِلقَذى

إِذا كَثُرَت وُرّادُهُ لَعَيوفُ

إِذا كَثُرَت وُرّادُهُ لَعَيوفُ

And indeed, water mingled with debris—

I'm like turbid water, mixed with mud

when its drinkers grow many—I utterly shun.

If many dip into it, it becomes more turbid
