أَمِنكِwas it from you? سَرىjourneyed by night ياO بَثنَButhayna طَيفٌa phantom تَأَوَّباreturned by night
أَمِنكِ سَرى يا بَثنَ طَيفٌ تَأَوَّبا
هُدُوّاًin the night's stillness فَهاجَthen stirred القَلبَthe heart شَوقاًwith longing وَأَنصَباand wearied it
هُدُوّاً فَهاجَ القَلبَ شَوقاً وَأَنصَبا
Was it from you, O Buthn, that a phantom journeyed by night, returning?
Was it from you, O Buthayna, that a phantom returned by night,
In the stillness it stirred the heart to longing and left it weary.
in the night's stillness, stirring the heart to longing and wearying it?
عَجِبتُI marveled لَهُat it أَنthat زارَit visited فيin النَومِsleep مَضجَعيmy bed
عَجِبتُ لَهُ أَن زارَ في النَومِ مَضجَعي
وَلَوand had زارَنيit visited me مُستَيقِظاًwhile I was awake كانَit would have been أَعجَباmore wondrous
وَلَو زارَني مُستَيقِظاً كانَ أَعجَبا
I marveled that it visited my bed while I slept;
I marveled that it visited my bed while I slept;
Had it visited me while I was awake, it would have been more wondrous.
and had it visited me while I was awake, it would have been more wondrous.
