هَلِwill ...? الحائِمُthe one circling for water العَطشانُthe thirsty one مُسقىًgiven drink بِشُربَةٍwith a draught
مِنَfrom المُزنِthe rainclouds تُرويquenches ماwhat بِهِafflicts him فَتُريحُand so brings relief
Will the circling, thirsty one be given a draught
Does the thirsty wanderer find relief
from the rainclouds, to quench his thirst and bring him relief?
In a drink of cool water to end his grief?
فَقالَتso she said فَنَخشىand so we fear إِنif سَقَيناكَwe give you drink شَربَةًa draught
تُخَبِّرُyou tell أَعدائيmy enemies بِهاof it فَتَبوحُand so divulge it
So she said, “We fear that, if we give you a draught,
"No," she said, "for if we let you drink
you will tell my enemies of it and divulge it.”
You may betray us, our secrets leak."
إِذَنin that case فَأَباحَتنيthen claimed me المَناياthe fates of death وَقادَنيand led me
إِلىto أَجَليmy appointed end عَضبُkeen-edged السِلاحِweaponry سَفوحُblood-spilling
Then may death claim me, and may I be led
So by death I am claimed, by the sword I am maimed
to my appointed end by a keen, blood-spilling blade!
To my fate I am led, though I meant no offense
لَبِئسَtruly wretched is إِذَنthen مَأوىa refuge الكَريمَةِthe noble lady سِرُّهاher secret
وَإِنّيand indeed I إِذَنthen مِنfrom حُبِّكُمlove for you لَصَحيحُsurely cured
What a wretched refuge I would then be for the noble lady’s secret,
Woe to she who shows kindness but hides veiled pretense
and then I would indeed be cured of my love for you!
Yet my love for you all remains true and intense
