أَرىI see كُلَّevery مَعشوقَينِpair of lovers غَيريother than me وَغَيرُهاand other than her
يِلَذّانِthey both take pleasure فيin الدُنياthis world وَيَغتَبِطانِand they both rejoice
I see every pair of lovers, except me and her,
I see every other lover and his beloved
Delighting in this world and rejoicing.
Enjoying life and feeling blissful,
وَأَمشيand I walk وَتَمشيand she walks فيin البِلادِthe lands كَأَنَّناas though we
أَسيرانِtwo captives لِلأَعداءِof the enemies مُرتَهَنانِheld hostage
And I walk, and she walks, through the lands as though we
While I walk and she walks in the lands as if
Were two captives held hostage by enemies.
We are two captives pledged to the enemies.
أُصَلّيI pray فَأَبكيthen I weep فيin الصَلاةِprayer لِذِكرِهاbecause I remember her
لِيَto me الوَيلُwoe مِمّاfor what يَكتُبُwrite المَلَكانِthe two angels
I pray, then weep in prayer at the thought of her;
I pray and weep during the prayer, remembering her,
Woe to me for what the two angels write!
Woe to me for what the two angels record!
ضَمِنتُI pledged لَهاto her أَنthat لاnot أُهيمَI fall madly in love بِغَيرِهاwith anyone other than her
وَقَدand already وَثِقَتshe trusted مِنّيin me بِغَيرِwithout ضَمانِa pledge
I pledged to her that I would love none but her,
I promised her I would not love anyone else.
And she had already trusted me without a pledge.
Yet she trusted me without any guarantee.
أَلاtake heed ياO عِبادَservants اللَهِof God قومواrise لِتَسمَعواso that you may hear
خُصومَةَa quarrel مَعشوقَينِtwo lovers يَختَصِمانِthey dispute with each other
Take heed, O servants of God: rise to hear
O servants of God, arise and listen
The quarrel of two lovers disputing with each other.
To the dispute of two lovers arguing!
وَفيand in كُلِّevery عامٍyear يَستَجِدّانِthey both renew مَرَّةًonce
عِتاباًreproach وَهَجراًand estrangement ثُمَّthen يَصطَلِحانِthey both reconcile
And once each year they renew
Every year they get once
Reproaches and estrangement, then make peace.
Reproach, estrangement, then reconcile.
يَعيشانِthey both live فيin الدُنياthis world غَريبَينِas two strangers أَينَماwherever
أَقاماthey both dwell وَفيand in الأَعوامِthe years يَلتَقِيانِthey both meet
They live in this world as strangers, wherever
They live in the world two strangers, wherever
They dwell, and over the years they meet.
They stay, and across years they meet.
وَماand no صادِياتٌthirsty creatures حُمنَthey circled يَوماًa day وَلَيلَةًand a night
عَلىat الماءِthe water يُغشَينَthey are struck with العِصِيَّthe sticks حَوانيbending low
And no thirsty creatures that circled for a day and a night
But ducks gathered never spend a day or night
At the water, struck with sticks, bending low,
On the water without covering the sticks with their wings.
لَواغِبُweary لاnot يَصدُرنَthey depart عَنهُfrom it لِوِجهَةٍtoward any destination
وَلاand not هُنَّthey مِنto بَردِthe coolness الحِياضِof the watering pools دَوانيnear
Weary, not departing from it in any direction,
Ardent, they never leave for any purpose,
Nor near the coolness of the watering pools,
Nor are they distracted by the cold ponds.
يَرَينَthey see حَبابَsurface ripples الماءِof the water وَالمَوتُand death دونَهُbetween them and it
فَهُنَّso they لِأَصواتِto the voices السُقاةِof the waterers رَوانيlistening intently
Seeing the water's ripples, with death between them and it,
They see the water bubbles and death beyond,
And so listening intently to the waterers' voices,
So they are content with the sounds of the water-bearers.
بِأَكثَرَany greater مِنّيthan I غُلَّةًburning thirst وَصَبابَةًand ardent longing
إِلَيكِfor you وَلَكِنَّand yet العَدُوَّthe enemy عَدانيkept me away
Have greater thirst and longing than I do
With more passion and coquetry toward you
For you—but the enemy has kept me away.
Than I, but the enemy has stood against me.
