بَنيsons of عامِرٍʿĀmir أَنّىwherever اِنتَجَعتُمyou sought pasture وَكُنتُمand you were
بَني عامِرٍ أَنّى اِنتَجَعتُم وَكُنتُم
إِذاwhen حُصِّلَwere assessed الأَقوامُthe tribes كَالخُصيَةِlike the testicle الفَردِsolitary
إِذا حُصِّلَ الأَقوامُ كَالخُصيَةِ الفَردِ
O sons of ʿĀmir, wherever you sought pasture and dwelt,
O clan of Amer, whence this decline though you were
when the tribes were assessed, you were like a lone testicle.
The choice kernel when men were garnered together?
فَأَنتُمso you وَلَأيٌand Laʾy مَوضِعَin the place of الذُلِّhumiliation حَجرَةًoff to one side
فَأَنتُم وَلَأيٌ مَوضِعَ الذُلِّ حَجرَةً
وَقُرَّةُand Qurra أولىmore deserving بِالعَلاءِof eminence وَبِالمَجدِand of glory
وَقُرَّةُ أولى بِالعَلاءِ وَبِالمَجدِ
So you and Laʾy stand off to one side, in the place of humiliation,
You it was who dwelt in abjection's abode,
and Qurra is more deserving of eminence and glory.
While the noble and the glorious deserved honor and glory.
