رَحَلتُمyou departed فَكَمso how many مِنof أَنَّةٍa moan بَعدَafter حَنَّةٍa cry of longing
مُبَيِّنَةٍrevealing لِلنّاسِto the people حُزنيmy grief عَلَيكُمُover you
You departed—how many a moan follows a cry of longing,
You departed, how many sighs after yearning
revealing to people my grief over you.
Revealing my sadness for you to people
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI had أَعتَقتُI freed الجُفونَthe eyelids مِنَfrom البُكاweeping
فَقَدbut indeed رَدَّهاreturned them فيinto الرِقِّbondage شَوقيmy longing إِلَيكُمُfor you
And I had freed my eyelids from weeping,
I had freed my eyelids from crying
but my longing for you has returned them to bondage.
Yet my longing for you returns them to tears
