وَفيهاand in it لَعَمرُby the life of اللَهِGod لِلعَينِfor the eye مَنظَرُa sight
We came by night to Bazūghā when its flowers had bloomed,
and there, by God's life, was a sight for the eye.
وَكَمand many a مِنof بَهارٍan oxeye bloom يَبهَرُdazzles العَينَthe eye حُسنُهُits beauty

And many an oxeye bloom whose beauty dazzled the eye,
and many a stream brimming with cool, sweet water,
وَمِنand of مُستَحِثٍّone urging others on بِالمُدامِwith wine كَأَنَّهُas though he were

وَإِنand even though كانَhe was ذِمِيّاًa protected non-Muslim أَميرٌan emir مُؤَمَّرُappointed to command
and many a man urging us to drink wine, as though he were,
though a dhimmi, an emir appointed to command.
وَفيand in كَفِّهِhis palm اليَمنىthe right شَرابٌa drink مُوَرَّدٌrose-tinted
وَفيand in كَفِّهِhis palm اليُسرىthe left بَنانٌfingers مُعَصفَرُsafflower-dyed
And in his right hand, a rose-tinted drink,
and in his left hand, safflower-dyed fingers.

خُدودٌcheeks عَلَيهِنِّupon them المَدامِعُtears تَقطُرُdrip
Anemones are moist with dew, as though they were
cheeks upon which tears drip.
وَكَمand many a ساقِطٍfallen man سُكراًfrom drunkenness يَلوكُchews لِسانَهُhis tongue
وَكَمand many a قائِلٍspeaker هَجراًnonsense وَماand not كانَhe used to يَهجُرُspeak nonsense
And many a man fallen drunk, chewing his tongue,
and many a man speaking nonsense who never used to speak it.
وَكَمand many a مُنشِدٍreciter بَيتاًa verse وَفيهِand in him بَقِيَّةٌa remnant
مِنَof العَقلِreason إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he is مُتَحَيِّرُbewildered
And many a man reciting a verse, with a remnant still in him
of reason, though he was bewildered.
فَكانَso was مِجَنّيmy shield دونَagainst مَنthose whom كُنتُI used to أَتَّقيfear
ثَلاثُthree شُخوصٍfigures كاعِبانِtwo maidens with budding breasts وَمُعصِرُand a girl nearing puberty
So my shield against those I feared was
three figures: two maidens with budding breasts and one nearing womanhood.
وَكَمand many a مِنof حُسانٍa handsome man جَسَّfingered أَوتارَthe strings عودِهِhis oud
فَأَلهَبَand so he kindled ناراًa fire فيin الحَشاthe breast تَتَسَعَّرُblazes fiercely
And many a handsome man fingered the strings of his oud,
and kindled a fire that blazed within the breast.
يُغَنّيhe sings وَأَسبابُand the means الصَوابِcorrectness تُمِدُّهُsustain him
بَصَوتٍwith a voice جَليلٍgreat ذِكرُهُits renown حينَwhen يُذكَرُit is recalled
He sings, sustained by the means of right performance,
with a voice whose renown is great whenever it is recalled.
أَحِنُّI yearn حَنينيَmy yearning الوالِهِthe distraught one الطَرِبِthe impassioned one الَّذيwho
ثَنىdoubled شَجوَهُhis sorrow بَعدَafter الغَداءِthe morning meal التَذَكُّرُremembrance
I yearn—my yearning is that of the distraught, impassioned man whose
sorrow remembrance doubled after the morning meal.
أَجَحظَةُO Jaḥẓa إِنif تَجزَعyou grieve عَلىover فَقدِthe loss of مَعشَرٍa company
فَقَدتَyou lost بِهِمwith them مَنthose who كانَused to لِلكَسرِfor the fracture يَجبُرُmend
O Jaḥẓa, if you grieve over the loss of a company,
you lost in them those who would mend what was broken.
وَأَصبَحتُand I have become فيamong قَومٍa people كَأَنَّas though عِظامَهُمtheir bones
إِذاwhen جَئتَهُمyou come to them فيin حاجَةٍa need تَتَكَسَّرُbreak apart
And I now find myself among people whose bones seem
to break apart whenever you come to them in need.
فَصَبراًso, show patience جَميلاًgracious إِنَّindeed فيin الصَبرِpatience مَقنَعاًcontentment
عَلىin the face of ماwhat جَناهُwrought it الدَهرُTime وَاللَهُand God أَكبَرُis greatest
So bear it with gracious patience: in patience there is contentment
despite what Time has wrought—and God is greatest.
