مَخزونَةٍ في خانَةِ الخَمّارِ
Ward off sorrow’s arrival from you with wine,
Drive the onset of sorrow away from you with wine,
long cellared in the vintner’s tavern.
Stored in the wine-seller's chamber.

It has passed through the span of lifetimes, until it seems,
It has outlasted lifetimes, and seems,
when tasted, to add years to one’s life.
When tasted, to lengthen lives.

A pampered youth, soft of eyelid, carries it round,
A pampered man with languid eyelids brings it round;
with the water of fresh beauty flowing in his cheek,
On his cheek flows the water of freshness,

In Riqqat al-Bardan, among fields
encircled by violets and bahār blossoms—
Ringed with violets and narcissi.

رَطبُ الأَصائِلِ بارِدُ الأَسحارِ
a land whose summer is likened to its autumn,
A land whose summer is like its autumn,
its late afternoons moist, its predawn hours cold.
With moist late afternoons and cool hours before dawn.
