قَدindeed زارَنيvisited me اليَومَtoday نورُthe light of عَينيmy eye
وَكانَand he had بِالأَمسِyesterday صَدَّturned away عَنّيfrom me
Today the light of my eye has visited me,
The light of my eyes visited me today,
Though yesterday he had turned away from me.
And yesterday he turned away from me.
وَلَيسَand there is no عِنديin my possession لَهُfor him مُدامwine
وَلَيسَand not يَرضىhe is satisfied بِذاكَwith that مِنّيfrom me
And I have no wine for him,
I have no wine to offer him,
Nor is he satisfied with that from me.
And he is not satisfied with that from me.
فَجُدso give generously عَلَيناto us بِنِصفِwith half of دَنٍّa wine jar
بِثُلثِwith a third of دَنٍّa wine jar بِرُبعِwith a quarter of دَنِّa wine jar
So grant us half a jar of wine,
So be generous with us with half a cup,
A third of a jar, a quarter of a jar.
A third of a cup, a quarter of a cup.
لاdo not تُنكِرَنcondemn كِذبَتيmy lie وَشَتميand my insults
فَإِنَّنيfor I am شاعِرٌa poet مُغَنّيa singer
Do not condemn my lie and my insults,
Do not deny my lies and insults,
For I am a poet and a singer:
For I am a poet and singer.
حالانِtwo conditions لَوif حالَفاboth allied themselves with مَليكاًa king
وافىhe would come يُناديcalling out بِكُلِّin every فَنِّmanner
Two conditions—if they kept company with a king,
If only two conditions allied a king
He would come calling out in every manner.
Fulfilling every art.
