تَساوى الناسُ في فِعلِ المساوي

تَساوى الناسُ في فِعلِ المساوي

فَما يَستَحسِنونَ سِوى القَبيحِ

فَما يَستَحسِنونَ سِوى القَبيحِ

People have become alike in committing misdeeds;

People are equal in their acts of depravity

So they admire nothing but the ugly.

So they find nothing beautiful but what is ugly

وَصارَ الجودُ عِندَهُمُ جُنوناً

وَصارَ الجودُ عِندَهُمُ جُنوناً

فَما يَستَعقِلونَ سِوى الشَحيحِ

فَما يَستَعقِلونَ سِوى الشَحيحِ

And generosity has become madness in their eyes;

Generosity has become madness to them

So they deem no one sane but the miser.

So they find nothing sane but stinginess

وَكانوا يَهرُبونَ مِنَ الأَهاجي

وَكانوا يَهرُبونَ مِنَ الأَهاجي

فَصاروا يَهرُبونَ مِنَ المَديحِ

فَصاروا يَهرُبونَ مِنَ المَديحِ

And they used to flee from lampoons;

They used to flee from calamities

So now they flee from praise.
