ماnot زارَنيvisited me فيin الحَبسِprison منanyone whom نادَمتُهُI drank with him
ما زارَني في الحَبسِ من نادَمتُهُ
كَأَسَينِtwo cups كَأسَa cup of مَوَدَّةٍaffection وَمُدامِand wine
كَأَسَينِ كَأسَ مَوَدَّةٍ وَمُدامِ
No one I had drunk with visited me in prison—
None who I yearned for visited me in my prison
over two cups: a cup of affection and a cup of wine.
Like two cups - a cup of affection and wine
بَخِلواthey were stingy عَلَيَّtoward me وَقَدand indeed طَلَبتُI asked for سَلامَهُمtheir greeting
بَخِلوا عَلَيَّ وَقَد طَلَبتُ سَلامَهُم
فَكَأَنَّنيso, as though I طالَبتُهُمI demanded of them بِطَعامِfor food
فَكَأَنَّني طالَبتُهُم بِطَعامِ
They were stingy toward me, though I had asked for their greeting,
They were stingy with me though I sought their peace
as though I had demanded food from them.
As though in seeking that I asked of them food
