My two friends, the morning draught! Dawn draws near.
My friend, dawn is near, morning is approaching
For wine is the cure for what you both feel.
It brings relief for all that pains you
فَنَبِّهso rouse فِتيَةًyoung men جَبَهواthey confronted قَديماًlong ago

So rouse young men who long ago confronted
So awaken the youth who have long been asleep
Their female reproachers with a rebuke, and so found peace.
With a rebuke, so they may find repose
رَأَيتُI saw الغانِياتِthe beautiful women صَدَدنَthey turned away عَنّيfrom me
وَأَعرَضَتِand she turned away المُبَتَّلَةُthe shapely woman الرَداحُthe full-hipped one
I saw the beautiful women turn away from me,
I saw the singers turn away from me
And the shapely, full-hipped woman turned away.
The afflicted one refused my company
وَقُلنَand they said مَضَتpassed بِشِرَّتِكَwith your youthful ardor اللَياليthe nights
فَقُلتُso I said نَعَمyes وَقَدand already رَثَّhas worn out السِلاحُthe weapon
And they said, “The nights have carried off your youthful ardor.”
They said, “Your youthful days are gone”
So I said, “Yes—and the weapon has already worn out.”
I said “Yes, and my weapons are worn”
