رَأَتsaw مِنهُin him عَينيmy eye مَنظَرَينِtwo sights كَماjust as رَأَتit saw
مِنَfrom الشَمسِthe sun وَالبَدرِand the full moon المُنيرِradiant عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth
My eye beheld in him two sights, like those it beheld
My eyes saw in him two sights, as they saw
Of the sun and the radiant full moon upon the earth,
The sun and the shining full moon on earth,
عَشِيَّةin the evening حَيّانيhe greeted me بوَردٍwith roses كَأَنَّهُas though it were
خُدودٌcheeks أُضيفَتwere joined بَعضُهُنsome of them إِلىto بَعضِothers
That evening he greeted me with roses, as though they were
In the evening he revived me with a rosebud
Cheeks joined one to another.
As if it were cheeks joined together,
وَنازَعَنيand shared with me كَأساًa cup كَأَنَّas though حُبابَهاits bubbles
دُموعيَmy tears لماwhen صَدَّturned away عَنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye غُمضيmy sleep
And he shared a cup with me, whose bubbles seemed
And he competed with me drinking a cup as if its bubbles
My tears when sleep forsook my eye.
Were my tears when sadness turned away from my eyelids,
وَراحَand he departed وَفِعلُand the effect الراحِthe wine فيin حَرَكاتِهِhis movements
كَفِعلlike the effect نَسيمِthe gentle breeze الريحِthe wind بِالغُصُنِupon the bough الغَضِّtender
And he departed, the wine's effect upon his movements
And he went away and the movement of his departure
Like the wind's gentle breath acting on a tender bough.
Was like the movement of a light breeze on a slender branch.
